Pike Fishing Tackle

So you're looking to catch the big one, eh? Well, you know what they say, 'Either go big or go home'.

NORTHERN PIKE

Northern Pike can be found worldwide in northern or Arctic waters. Large, trophy size Pike are common in many of Ontario's lakes and rivers. They will generally feed on anything that swims, including Walleyes, Suckers, Chub and even other Pike. So if you want to catch the really big Pike, don't waste time using small baits and lures . Although even the smaller Pike will provide great sport on lightweight tackle and have often saved an otherwise slow day on the water.

The good news is that Pike are some of the easiest fish to catch and they will hit almost any type of lure. Red and yellow spoons and large, flashy crank baits are popular choices but just about any fast swimming, active lure will work. Using a lure that has a lot of action and gives the appearance of a crippled or injured fish will attract Pike.

Big Pike will normally be found where they can ambush their prey. These locations include weedy areas around points leading into bays, rocky areas, shoals, islands and at the mouth of a river or stream. The bigger Pike tend to move around a lake all year, looking for food and ideal water temperatures. Some of the biggest Pike are often caught while Walleye fishing as these big Pike will be cruising around the Walleye schools looking for an easy meal.

Northern Pike are considered to be a delicious food fish, however they may contain a 'muddy' taste, which can be eliminated by first removing the skin prior to cooking. As with many game fish, the smaller Pike are the best for eating because the larger fish tend to be grainy. So please remember... Only keep what you will eat and release the rest.
